What is the best time of year to view the bears?
Our bear viewing is from May to the end of August each year. In May, June and July bears are out of hybernation and feeding on sedge grass, barnicles and mussles on the beaches. In the beginning of August through to September visitors get the view the grizzlies and cubs catching salmon at the mouths of the creeks as the fish begin their journey up stream to spawn. You may also see massive schools of fish gathering at the mouths of the creeks, eagles, wolves and seals. During your flight in it is common to see mountain goats and hump back whales.
Do you guarantee bear sightings?
Palmerville Adventures has an excellent record for bear sightings on the Khutzeymateen tours. It is important to note that wildlife is unpredictable, and bear sighings are not guaranteed. Guests have commented that the scenery and outdoor experiences are the real values of the trip, and are so satisfied that bear sightings are a bonus.
What should we wear?
Dress comfortably for this outdoor trip. We will be travelling in real wilderness. Because it is always cool on North Coast waters, and coastal weather may change rapidly, we encourage guests to dress appropriately. We suggest dressing layers so that you can remove a jacket or sweater if you are too warm, or put on fleece if you find it to be cool. Example: t-shirt, shirt or blouse, sweater or fleece, jacket. Light rainwear is recommended. Bring your camera and binoculars.
If you do not have appropriate outerwear, we can supply it. We have warm, waterproof survival suits which meet rigorous Canadian Coast Guard standards. We can provide lightweight rainwear to keep you dry and snug. We also have a supply of rubber boots, hats and gloves for the use of our guests. Restroom facilities are available in the Khutzeymateen.
